Stable and Diverse Economy
Chattanooga is the hub of a thriving economic region with a labor draw of one million people. Among the city’s economic advantages are excellent transportation systems, a strong tourism industry, trained labor force, low cost of living and a centralized location. Nearly 50,000 people work in downtown Chattanooga’s commercial, professional, government, healthcare and back office operations. Downtown is the headquarters of the Unum Group (insurance), BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, Krystal Company, the Electric Power Board and TVA.

Chattanooga’s long manufacturing history continues with major existing, expanding and new manufacturing operations. Alstom Power recently announced a new $280 million plant addition to manufacture power generation equipment, and food and beverage makers like McKee (Little Debbie) and Wrigley have recently completed major expansions.

In July 2008, Volkswagen chose Chattanooga for its only North American assembly facility. Construction is underway with production slated for early 2011 with the capacity to build 150,000 vehicles. The $1 billion facility will create over 2,000 direct jobs to the Chattanooga area.

In addition, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga SimCenter, a nationally recognized academic research center of excellence, is bringing new jobs and recognition to the city. As a whole, the city is a stable and profitable business location with a bright economic future.
