BuyIt*Downtown is a prepaid shopping card program aimed at encouraging consumer spending and helping economic development in downtown Chattanooga. All participating locations are connected electronically through a private network exclusively for downtown merchants. The network tracks activity across locations and facilitates promotional efforts across participating locations. To keep participation costs economical for shoppers and vendors alike, generous support has been provided by local private foundations and our corporate sponsors. Card sales are directed at group sales, as well as individuals. Card programs are also available for universities.
While most gift card and spending card programs can profit significantly from unspent cards, the goal of BuyIt*Downtown Chattanooga is to encourage spending so that dollars get into the local economy. Reminders, incentives and specials are used to encourage shoppers to spend any unspent balances. Due to its objective and anticipated strategies, BuyIt*Downtown does not expect to see much, if any, unspent gift card funds. Should there be any remaining balances, they will be managed according to State and Federal Laws. Any proceeds from Buy it*Downtown Chattanooga benefit retail economic development programs of the RiverCity Company.
